High hurdlers

A pair of Belmont University men's track and field hurdlers posted top-tier times in the Ohio Valley Conference during events held Saturday.

Caleb Corprew (Midwest City, Okla.) ran what is the fastest 110-meter hurdles time in the conference this season at Auburn's War Eagle Invitational, while fellow senior Christian Crenshaw (Memphis, Tenn.) put up the third-best time in the 400 hurdles at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta.

Though not a personal record, Corprew's 110 hurdles time of 14.40 is the fastest he's run in the event so far this season. It was good for fifth place at Auburn.

With the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships right around the corner, Corprew isn't content yet and is focused on pushing that time down into the 13-second range.

"I'm not where I want to be yet so it's going to be a lot of hard work these next few weeks," Corprew said. "We're going to really zone in and work on technique and a few other things before conference. Just going to trust the training and do whatever it takes to lay down a big time at conference."

Elsewhere, Crenshaw's PR 52.70 pushed him up to No. 3 in the 400 hurdles in the OVC and gave him an eighth-place finish at Georgia Tech. He hadn't run a time under 54.90 this outdoor season.

"Crenshaw's race was incredible. For him to drop that much time in the span of a few weeks is unprecedented," said Belmont Assistant Track Coach Joe Frye.

A few seconds behind him was sophomore Alex Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo.), whose time of 54.41 set a personal record and marked the fifth-best OVC time this season.

Corprew holds the No. 2 time in that event, a 52.43 he ran three weeks ago at the Texas Relays.

Other top marks this week included a discus throw for junior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) of 47.73 meters (156-7), the fourth-best distance in the OVC. It's his best throw since transferring to Belmont from Lipscomb two years ago and his second best mark ever.

Sophomore Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.) now has the sixth-best high jump of 1.90 meters (6-2.75) and junior Nate Nammour (Tampa, Fla) has the sixth-best 200-meter time of 21.93, which was run back at the Auburn meet.

The OVC Outdoor Championships will be held May 10-12 at Tennessee Tech's track in Cookeville, Tenn.
