NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont Bruins Men's and Women's Track & Field teams kick off their indoor seasons on Saturday, December 1, competing at the Vanderbilt Indoor Opener in the Multipurpose Facility at Vanderbilt University.
The meet is slated to begin at 10 a.m., with the first events in action on the field side - the men's and women's high jump, women's weight throw, and the women's long jump. The final event of the day, the men's 400-meter relay, begins approximately at 5:25 p.m.
In this first meet of the indoor season, the Bruins will be facing a handful of OVC schools, including Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State, Murray State, and Austin Peay. They will also be competing against regional foes Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State, Memphis, and Trevecca Nazarene, as well as athletes from Berry, Bryan College, Campbellsville, Cumberlands, Kentucky Wesleyan, Lindsey Wilson, Little Rock, McKendree, Mercer, Southern Indiana, and Tennessee Wesleyan.
There will be several athletes to keep an eye on during this meet, including sophomores Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.) and Caroline Pruitt (Allen, Texas). Mitchell will be competing in a trio of events, the high jump, long jump, and the 60-meter dash. Last year at this meet, he placed fifth in the high jump. Senior Corey Claiborne (Alpharetta, Ga.) took first in the Shot Put at the same meet with a school record toss one year ago. Pruitt will be vie in the long jump and the 60-meter hurdles. Senior Karly Hibbard (Edmonds, Wash.) posted a sixth-place finish in the Shot Put at last year's meet.
This will be the only meet in the month of December for either program. The Bruins return to competition in January 2019, with another stop at VU for the annual Vanderbilt Invitational.
