BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Belmont men's track and field freshman Bo Miller picked up the first meet victory of his young collegiate career in the javelin throw at Western Kentucky's Hilltopper Relays on Saturday.
Miller (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led a small group of Bruin throwers in Bowling Green, Ky., measuring 57.86 meters (189-10) on his throw to win by more than six full meters. Junior teammate Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.) was third in the javelin at 47.68 meters (156-5), a personal record.
For Miller, the throw marked a personal best and his second of at least 56 meters this season. He has the two longest throws in the Ohio Valley Conference this season after previously setting a PR of 56.79 meters (186-4) two weeks ago at Vanderbilt.
The Bruins also had a handful of entrants in the discus event Saturday, led by senior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.). Gibson threw a season-best 44.13 meters (144-9) to place eighth, just ahead of sophomore teammate Ryan Sheldon (Anchorage, Alaska) and his season-best 42.63 meters (139-10).
Gibson's throw would be the sixth best in the OVC based based on marks entering this weekend.
"We had a good day with great weather," said Belmont Assistant Track Coach Joe Frye. "We always throw better when we have great weather. They're on the right track and we're looking forward to next week."
The Bruins will be in nearby Clarksville, Tenn., this coming Friday and Saturday for the Governors Invitational.
