ATLANTA – After the Belmont men's track and field team put on a show Friday on the track, the Bruin throwers took over the spotlight Saturday at the Georgia Tech Invitational.
A pair of big personal records led to two high placings, including a victory in the discus throw for sophomore Ryan Sheldon (Anchorage, Alaska).
Sheldon smashed his PR in the event with a throw of 47.14 meters (154-8) to just edge out a field full of the top discus throwers in the Ohio Valley Conference. The throw is Sheldon's career best by nearly 12 feet and ranks as the fourth-best mark in the OVC overall this season.
The three throwers to have bested Sheldon's 47-meter toss this spring finished second, third and fourth to the big Bruin on Saturday in Atlanta though.
In the shot put, freshman Reece Davidson (Arvada, Colo.) also logged the fourth-best throw in the OVC this season with a personal-record distance of 15.66 meters (51-4.5). That placed him fourth in the event. Davidson also had a PR in the discus of 40.51 meters (132-11).
Freshman Noah Grimm (Brighton, Mich.) snagged another fourth-place finish for Belmont in the high jump. He cleared 1.90 meters (6-2.75) on his first attempt. Junior Drake Mitchell (Nashville, Tenn.) also jumped 1.90 meters, but settled for fifth place due to tiebreakers. It took him multiple attempts to clear the bar at that height.
Other top Belmont event finishers included junior Ben Weisel (Nashville, Tenn.), who ran to 10th in the 800 meters in 1:53.60, and senior Nate Nammour (Tampa, Fla.), who finished 12th in the 400 meters in 49.02.
Most of the Belmont squad will take this next week off to recuperate and prepare for the final push toward the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships coming up in less than three weeks. The OVC Championships begin May 9 in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
