Nelson Receives First Team All-Atlantic Sun Honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After an outstanding senior campaign that saw her ranked nationally in six categories and near the tops of several conference statistical categories, Belmont women's basketball senior Haley Nelson (Scottsboro, Ala.) was named to the 2011-12 All-Atlantic Sun First Team.  It marks the second time in her career she has received post-season honors from the conference.

 

Nelson nearly averaged a double-double all season.  In scoring, she was ranked no lower than fifth, averaging 14.5 points per contest. On the glass, she led the A-Sun in rebounds, pulling down 9.1 boards per outing.  She also led the league in blocked shots (63) and defensive rebounds (206), was second in field-goal percentage (.519), fourth in scoring, and 10th in steals (1.8). 

 

Amongst all NCAA Division I players, the Scottsboro, Ala., native finished the regular season ranked sixth in double doubles with a total of 15, 29th in field-goal percentage, 30th in blocked shots per game (2.2), 52nd in rebounds per game, 176th in points per game and 289th in steals per game (1.8).

 

In the Atlantic Sun records book, she is ranked 45th in all-time scoring with 1,210 points.  She is also ranked 17th all-time in rebounds with a total of 864 rebounds and eighth all-time in blocks with 190 recorded. 

 

At Belmont, Nelson, who became just the 26th women's player to eclipse the 1,000 point plateau, stands fifth all-time among players in the NCAA Division I era and is ranked sixth all-time in rebounds with a total of 864.  She is also second all-time in blocks with a total of 190.

 

Nelson was named A-Sun Player of the Week three consecutive weeks and also received Player of the Week nods from CollegeSportsMadness.com and NetScouts.com during the season. 

 

Belmont returns to action on Thursday at the 2012 General Shale Brick Atlantic Sun Tournament.  The Bruins, who are the No. 3 seed, take on No. 6 Jacksonville beginning at 6:05pm ET.  The contest can be seen live on ASun.TV and heard live via the internet on the Bruins Sports Network.  Live stats and a Twitter feed (@BelmontWBB) will also be available.
