Women's Soccer Held Off in Boulevard Exhibition

Women's Soccer Held Off in Boulevard Exhibition

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- After controlling the tempo for much of the contest, the Belmont women's soccer team (0-0) was unable to rebound from an early goal and was held off in its first exhibition match of the 2014 season.  The Bruins fell to Lipscomb (0-0), 2-0, in a Battle of the Boulevard matchup.

In spite of Belmont controlling the pace for the opening five minutes of play, it would be Lipscomb who would find the back of the net first at the 5:48 mark.  Undaunted, the Bruins continued to attack the ball, forcing action to stay midfield and deep in Lady Bisons territory for much of the half.

BU opened the second stanza much more aggressively.  Senior Alison Alcott (Dallas, Texas) nearly netted the equalizer in the 51st minute but it was punched out after touching the far right post.  The back and forth battle resumed until Lipscomb scored a security goal in the 80th minute.  Belmont ramped up its intensity once again but unfortunately was unable to find the back of the net in the waning minutes as the Lady Bisons held on for the 2-0 win.

"I was very proud of our effort after we didn't get the start we wanted," said Head Coach Heather Henson.  "We went in at halftime and made adjustments from the first to the second half.  We were able to create our attacks and build into the middle third of the field.

"One good thing is that we outshot them tonight," Henson said.  "We want to make goalkeepers have to work.  Lipscomb's goalkeeper was good but even the best have an off day.  So we are going to keep working to get those goals.  Unfortunately, tonight wasn't one of those nights but I was really proud of us continuing to push for that element."

BU held the advantage in shots, 9-7, and forced LU to come up with seven saves.

Alcott and juniors Emily Proud (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Cassie Blase (Waukesha, Wisc.) each recorded two shots.

Junior Lindsey Espe (LaCanada, Calif.) went the distance between the posts and finished with one save.

Belmont returns to action on Sunday for its final exhibition contest on the road at UAB.  Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in Birmingham.
