MURRAY, Ky. -- The Belmont women's soccer team (6-7-4, 3-4-2 OVC) picked up its fifth shutout of the season on the road at Murray State (10-8, 6-3 OVC) on Sunday. The Bruins knocked off the Racers, 2-0, snapping their four match win streak.
The teams appeared to be evenly matched in the first stanza, with each recording nine shots. However, the second half saw the Bruins ramp up the intensity as they hunted for the first goal of the afternoon.
Senior Allie Hicks (Carmel, Ind.) would find the back of the net in the 59th minute to get BU on the board. She also went on to drill the insurance goal, her fourth of the season, in the 80th minute with assists coming from freshmen Belicia Mendiola (McKinney, Texas) and Tara Austin (Beaumont, Texas) who made great passes in the box to Hicks' awaiting foot.
"The ladies committed to it today," said Head Coach Heather Henson. "They knew what the situation was in terms of needing to win this game. They were determined and played our system and we able to create two goals.
"It was a team effort, just like the other night. Murray State is a very good team. They have some very dangerous players. We did a good job today defensively being aware of that and were able to counteract that."
Belmont outshot MSU, 19-16, but Murray State held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-3.
Junior Lindsey Espe (LaCañada, Calif.) went the distance between the posts, logging six saves.
Belmont returns to action on Friday, October 31, traveling to in-state rival Austin Peay. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Live stats will be available.
