NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont will open the eighth week of the 2012 season on the road at UT-Martin. The Bruins will face the Skyhawks in a single game in Martin, Tenn. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
The contest will mark the first of a five game road swing for Belmont. The Bruins will begin Atlantic Sun Conference play on the road in Jacksonville, Fla., where they will face Jacksonville and North Florida over the weekend. Martin leads the series with Belmont, 14-5 all-time, and swept the Bruins in last year's meeting at Rose Park. The last win for Belmont came back in 1999.
The Bruins are paced by senior Ashley Byers (Westerville, Ohio), who leads the team in batting average (.356), hits (21), RBIs (12) and home runs (4). She aslo leads in on base percentage (.465). Two freshmen have also had an impact on the Bruins as of late. Freshmen Kat Hollingsworth and Heather Turner are tied for second behind Byers in hits (14) and rank second (Hollingsworth, 10) and third (Turner, 9) in RBIs. Both were key in Belmont's comeback against Marshall last week. Although the Bruins fell short of the upset, Hollingsworth and Turner both posted strong games. Hollingsworth had one run on two hits with two RBIs, while Turner launched her second career home run, scoring three runs and three RBIs.
Belmont will be back at Rose Park for most of April, beginning next weekend when the Bruins host Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast in double headers to open the home portion of their conference schedule.
Weather hasn't been kind to the Bruins so far this season, particularly when it comes to games scheduled against Tennessee Tech. Belmont and TTU have now been rained out twice, but are still trying to find a way to reschedule the game. The two teams met on a neutral site earlier this season and the Bruins picked up their first win of 2012 with a 6-5 win.
