NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- For the second time in a week, Belmont will host a cross-town opponent as Tennessee State pays its first ever visit to Rose Park in a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon. The first game begins at 4 p.m.
The Bruins are coming off a rough week offensively, falling in two close games to Western Kentucky and the first game against Lipscomb, before dropping a 0-9 decision to the Lady Bisons in game two on Saturday.
Belmont will look to get back on track against Tennessee State, a team they match up well with on paper, with both teams have similar statistics and comparable records. The Bruins are 8-29 while TSU is 10-30 on the season. This will be the first meeting between the two teams this season, although both teams were in action in the same tournament earlier this year when they competed in the Tiger Classic at Tennessee State. It will be the first visit for TSU to Rose Park, but not the last, as the Tigers will become a regular conference opponent for the Bruins next season when Belmont joins the Ohio Valley Conference.
The Bruins are led by senior Ashley Byers who continues to lead the team in hitting percentage (.344), hits (30), RBIs (19), and home runs (6). Belmont will need another strong performance from Byers to help jumpstart the offense, which has struggled in recent weeks, having been shut out in three straight games. The silver lining for the Bruins has been the defense, particularly the pitching of sophomore Mia Vierra, who leads the team in ERA and innings pitched.
The first game at Rose Park is scheduled for 4 p.m., with the second scheduled to start around 6 p.m. The doubleheader will close out an eight game home stand for Belmont as the Bruins head to Georgia for meetings with Mercer and Kennesaw State in conference play. Belmont will be back in Nashville for USC Upstate and East Tennessee State in the A-Sun finale during the first week of May. Belmont will host ETSU for Senior Day on May 5th.
