NASHVILLE, Tenn. –Belmont Softball (7-2) return to their home field for the second consecutive weekend hosting a tournament, this time the inaugural Bruin Classic. Competing in the three-day tournament are Butler (2-7), North Carolina A&T State University (2-8), and the University of Northern Iowa (9-6).
Butler has lost four of its last five outings to now stand at 2-7 heading into this weekend's tournament. The Bulldogs are led at the plate by Jenna Foreman, who is batting .484 with 15 hits and pair of runs scored.
Work inside the circle is helmed by Alyssa Graves, who has thrown 25.1 innings to the tune of a 2.21 ERA with 20 strikeouts and a 1-3 record.
Belmont and Butler have only met once before, during the 2014 campaign. The Bulldogs narrowly won that meeting 3-2 in eight innings here in Nashville.
North Carolina A&T looks to get back on the winning side after dropping four of their last five outings before traveling to Nashville. The Aggies stand at 2-8 overall. Marcey Jiles leads NCAT at the plate, batting .455 with five hits, a double and two runs scored.
Inside the circle, Mohagony Headen leads the hurlers with a 4.53 ERA after throwing 29.1 innings and recording 25 strikeouts.
This marks the second meeting between the programs. Belmont won the first contest in 2004 in Greensboro, N.C., 5-4 in eight innings.
Northern Iowa comes to Nashville looking to snap a five-game skid. The losses move the Panthers to 9-6 on the season. Brittney Roby leads UNI at the plate, batting .468 with 22 hits, three doubles and eight RBI.
Jaclyn Spencer has racked up the most wins inside the circle for the Panthers, sporting a 4-3 record after 40.0 innings of work with 33 strikeouts and a 3.15 ERA.
This marks the first meeting between Belmont and UNI.
BU enters the weekend fresh off capturing the Belmont/TSU Winter Warmup title, after going undefeated on its home field last week. The Bruins now stand at 7-2 on the season.
Sophomore Bailey Sims (Flowery Branch, Ga.) leads Belmont at the plate, batting .500 with a 16 hits, three doubles, two RBI and seven runs scored. Junior Chelsea Thomas (Hot Springs, Ark.) is right behind her batting .464 with 13 hits, six doubles, six RBI and three runs scored.
Inside the circle, sophomore Brooklin Lee (Burns, Tenn.) has seen action in 35.1 innings, recording a whopping 48 strikeouts to the tune of a 0.99 ERA and a 4-1 record. Senior Lexi Rouse (Macon, Ga.) sports a 2-0 record and a 0.82 ERA after tossing 17.0 innings with six strikeouts.
Friday's first game is set for 2 p.m. against Butler and 4:30 is the approximate start time versus North Carolina A&T. Live stats will be available for all contests during the three-day tournament.
