NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University Softball rising senior Hayley Baker (Rockwall, Texas) was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Softball Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization announced today.
Baker becomes just the second Bruin Softball player to garner Academic All-America honors following behind Shersty Stanton who earned the honor one year ago. She is also the 27th Belmont student-athlete overall and only the sixth female student-athlete from BU to earn Academic All-America distinction.
She also stands as the lone Ohio Valley Conference representative on the elite list this year and one of only two student-athletes from institutions in the state of Tennessee.
"Hayley is the epitome of what a student-athlete is supposed to be. Her dedication to her academic and athletic endeavors are truly extraordinary. She is a great player and an even better teammate," said Head Coach Brian Levin.
"To accomplish what she has in her field of study (biochemistry & molecular biology) while withstanding the rigors that a collegiate sport entails is a testament to her character. We are extremely proud of Hayley."
No less than 29 of the 33 members of the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division I Softball Team have at least a 3.90 G.P.A., with 19 student-athletes maintaining a 4.00 GPA (or better) as either undergraduate or graduate students.
Earlier this spring, Baker earned her first CoSIDA Academic All-District nod.
The outfielder finished her junior campaign tied 38th nationally in sacrifice flies and led the team in the category. Baker started and played in all but four contests all season, batting .232 with five doubles, a triple, and 13 RBI.
One year ago, the native of Rockwall, Texas was named CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 First Team and earned Easton / NFCA Division I Scholar-Athlete distinction at the end of the 2015-16 season. A 2016 OVC All-Newcomer Team selection, Baker has earned OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll distinction each season.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his current institution and be nominated by her media relations' director.
