NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Belmont University Softball earned a split in Fall Ball action over the weekend. The Bruins were edged 7-5 by long-time rival Lipscomb before overtaking Lee, 3-2, to close the doubleheader day.
In a precursor to the annual Battle of the Boulevard dual, the Bruins outhit LU, 9-7. The Bisons were able to post seven runs over the first two innings of play before Belmont battled back to shut them out over the next five innings of play. Sophomore Alicia Veltri (Clarksville, Tenn.) tossed the last five innings in the contest and only surrendered a pair of hits in her dominating turn inside the circle but Belmont was held off 7-5.
In the nightcap against Lee, BU took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Junior Brooklin Lee (Burns, Tenn.) was strong inside the circle over the first four innings of play. The Flames were able to answer back late in contest, posting runs in the fifth and sixth innings with sophomore Autumn McDanel (Moravia, Iowa) taking a turn inside the circle. Both teams posted a run in the fifth frame and Lee went on to knot the score 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning. However, the Bruins were able to post the go-ahead run in the bottom of same frame. Newcomer Brittany Kennett (Melbourne, Australia) concluded the contest pitching for the Bruins, retiring Lee's final three batters in the seventh inning to secure the 3-2 win for BU.
Belmont will wrap its Fall Ball schedule this weekend hosting Motlow State for a doubleheader on Saturday, October 13. The games will be held at E.S. Rose Park with first pitch set for Noon.
