NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Belmont University Softball sophomore class is eager to return to the field for the opportunity to help the Bruins earn a berth to the Ohio Valley Conference tournament for the second time in program history. The class is comprised of Cheyenne Cavanaugh (Spring, Texas), Georgia McKee (Frisco, Texas), Elison Ollinger (Robins, Iowa), Alicia Veltri (Clarksville, Tenn.) and transfer Autumn McDanel (Moravia, Iowa).
Ollinger appeared in 41 contests with 10 runs one year ago to lead the class while Cavanaugh led the group in batting, coming in at a .208 clip.
Inside the circle, Veltri posted a 3.26 ERA and collected 77 strikeouts to stand second in the BU pitching corps.
Newcomer McDanel began her collegiate career at Des Moines Area Community College, posting a 3-1 record inside the circle with a 1.38 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 25.1 innings before joining the Bruins. The native of Moravia, Iowa was an Under Armor Preseason All-American selection and earned First Team All-Conference three times. The right-handed pitcher was named First Team All-District four times and was tabbed First and Second Team All-State and Honorable Mention All-State during her career at Moravia Community High.
"Our sophomore class is a really athletic group. They have had a year to adjust to the rigors of being a student-athlete which, I believe, will help them make an even bigger impact than last season," said Head Coach Brian Levin.
"They were major contributors last year, so it is going to be fun to watch how that year of experience will pay off going into this season. They all young ladies of great character and exactly what we want leading the program into the future."
Belmont opens the 2019 season on the road at the Madeira Beach Invitational, February 15-17.
