NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a stellar performance on both sides of the plate last week to open the season, Belmont University Softball sophomore Alicia Veltri (Clarksville, Tenn.) was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week on Monday, the league announced. It is the first time in her career she has received the honor.
Veltri was vicious on both sides of the plate at the Madeira Beach Invitational in Florida over the weekend. Veltri hit .500 with seven hits, five runs, one double, two home runs and nine RBI as Belmont went 4-1. Inside the circle, she posted a 0.58 ERA with 19 strikeouts over 12 innings of work for a 2-0 record.
She pulled double duty vs Akron, fanning seven batters and going 2-for-3 with a double and a homerun. Splitting time in the circle versus Monmouth, she recorded 5 Ks and went 1-for-2 at the plate before helping BU rout Drexel with a 16-1 win after going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and a pair of RBI. On the tournament's final day, she picked up the win inside the circle, tallying seven strikeouts and smashed a two run homer that helped lead to Belmont's walkoff win.
Veltri and the rest of the Bruins return to action this weekend at the 16th annual Georgia Classic, hosted by the University of Georgia.
