NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Belmont Softball fell behind early but rallied just a little too late to overcome visiting No. 17/18 Ole Miss on Tuesday evening. The Bruins (19-15) were held off by the Rebels (25-9), 11-1, at E.S. Rose Park.
Ole Miss used a two-run homerun to get on the board in the top of the first frame. BU was able to settle down in the next inning and looked to sophomore Alicia Veltri (Clarksville, Tenn.) inside the circle to help lead the way. She fanned two of three batters in the next half inning. However, the Rebels came storming back in the top of the third, sending six runners over the plate, to take an 8-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, the visitors added an additional run but Belmont waved its collective rally caps in the bottom of the same frame. Senior Hayley Baker (Rockwall, Texas) sent a single to right and was joined on base by classmate Chelsea Thomas (Hot Springs, Ark.) after an Ole Miss error. Freshman Audrey Lyle (Westlake, Ohio) drove a single to left to help send what would become Belmont's lone run of the day over the plate. The Rebels went on to add two more runs in the top of the fifth the secure the 11-1 victory.
For the day, Baker went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
Inside the circle, Veltri and junior Brooklin Lee (Burns, Tenn.) split time. The duo combined for nine strikeouts.
Belmont returns to action on Wednesday evening with a game on the road at Samford. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. Live stats will be available and the contest can be seen live on ESPN+.
