MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Fueled by six homeruns, Belmont University Softball extended its win streak to three games with a sweep on the road at Morehead State on Saturday. The Bruins (22-15, 4-6 OVC) defeated the Eagles (2-27, 0-8 OVC), 10-0 in five innings and 12-3 in six innings.
The Bruins wasted little time making a dent on the scoreboard in the top of the opening frame, using a solo shot over the right fence by senior Hayley Baker (Rockwall, Texas) to post its first run of the day. Not to be outdone, sophomore Alicia Veltri (Clarksville, Tenn.) duplicated the feat, smashing her solo homerun over the left fence to put Belmont ahead, 2-0. BU added one more run in the top of the third before its bats caught fire over the next two innings.
In the top of fourth inning, the Bruins pushed three runners over the plate. Senior Chelsea Thomas (Hot Springs, Ark.) reached on four balls before being moved to third with a double up the middle by Veltri. Junior Brooklin Lee (Burns, Tenn.) laid down a great bunt that saw the first run hustle over the plate. The Eagles changed pitchers but the Bruin bats remained hot. Senior Baylee Cook (Lewisburg, Tenn.) smashed a double to left to send two more runners home and put Belmont ahead, 6-0. The hits kept coming in the top of the fifth. Junior Bailey Sims (Flowery Branch, Ga.) singled and was moved to second after Thomas was walked again. Veltri smacked a three-run homer over the centerfield fence, forcing MSU to make another pitching change. It didn't seem to matter to Lee as she connected for a single homerun off the second pitch to put Belmont ahead, 10-0. The Bruins then turned a 3 up, 3 down half inning to secure their win by the same score.
In the nightcap, the Bruins were again the first to post runs, recording three over the second and third innings. Morehead State was able to notch a run in the bottom of the fourth frame but was matched with a one run output in the top of the following inning by Belmont. Leading 4-1 heading into the top of the sixth, the Bruins made their move.
All told, BU posted a whopping eight runs off of eight hits, batting around during the effort. Morehead State attempted to slow the streaking Bruins with a pair of pitching changes but could not find an answer. Belmont concluded the scoring onslaught with a grand slam by Lee, the first of her career as a Bruin to lift the team to a 12-1 advantage. MSU attempted to show signs of life in its half of the same frame, squeaking two runs across but the Bruins were able to clamp down to secure the 12-3 win.
For the day, Veltri led the Bruins at the plate, batting .800 with a double and pair of homeruns. Sims batted .714 with one double and two RBI.
Inside the circle, Lee picked up her 10th victory of the season in game one, recording five strikeouts. Veltri notched the win in the nightcap, tallying a pair of strikeouts.
Belmont returns to action on Tuesday, April 9 at E.S. Rose Park. The Bruins host crosstown rival Tennessee State for a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Live stats will be available and the games can be seen live on ESPN+.
