NASHVILLE, Tenn. – For the second time in program history, Belmont University Softball has punched a ticket to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
The Bruins earned the No. 6 seed heading into the tournament being held in Oxford, Ala., May 8-11. The sixth seed is the highest for Belmont heading into postseason play.
The 2019 OVC Tournament field consists of #1 Southeast Missouri State, #2 Jacksonville State, #3 Austin Peay, #4 Murray State, #5 Eastern Kentucky, #7 UT Martin and #8 SIUE. The top seed for this year's tournament was decided by a coin flip in the OVC office in Brentwood, Tenn., breaking the tiebreaker between SEMO and Jacksonville State.
Belmont will open postseason play against No. 7 UT Martin on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Choccolocco Park. The winner will advance to take on No. 3 Austin Peay on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
BU is 1-2 all-time at the OVC Tournament and made its postseason debut in 2017, the first year under current head coach Brian Levin. In double elimination format, the Bruins fell in their first game to No. 1 seed and eventual champion, Jacksonville State 8-5 but rebounded to topple No. 5 Murray State, 5-1, on the second day of the tournament. Belmont was held off 4-0 by No. 2 UT Martin, cutting short the team's postseason dreams.
