CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont women's tennis team won seven singles matches and one doubles title as they competed in the Austin Peay Fall Classic held this past weekend in Clarksville, Tennessee.
The doubles duo of juniors Fabiana Mersan and Catherine Holliday won the Flight B Doubles title. In the quarterfinals, they beat Joanna Corkern and Amanda Miller of SIUE 8-3, and then defeated Jana Heuckinghaus and Tamara Plocher of Kennesaw State in the semifinals 8-5. In the final, they beat Rachel Webb and Haley Ilcewicz of SIUE 8-5.
In singles, Mersan, junior Carolyn Caire, and senior Laura Stack all went 2-1 in their flights. Stack beat Tamara Plocher of Kennesaw State and Sam Bowman of Lipscomb, but lost in semifinals to Andra Cornea of Austin Peay 7-6, 6-4. Mersan lost in the main draw to Zsafin Lanstiak of Lewis University 6-3, 6-0, but came back and posted consolation bracket victories over SIUE's Kali Donner and Amanda Miller. Caire also lost in the first round of the main draw, but came back and notched victories over Weronika Kurka of Austin Peay and Joanna Corkern in the consolation bracket.
The women's tennis team hits the court again this Friday-Sunday, October 14-16, at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional Tournament in Memphis, Tennessee.
