HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – There weren't many Bruins competing the first day of the Marshall Chipotle Invitational on Friday, but Kortney Schardt's performance made sure Belmont University wasn't lacking in highlights at the indoor track and field meet.
The Bruins' sophomore distance runner churned out a career-best time in the 5,000 meters on her way to a victory in the event. Schardt ran a 17:28.92 to finish almost exactly 10 seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.
It's the first time Schardt (Lindenhurst, Ill.) has run the 5,000 during an collegiate indoor meet, but she blew by her former personal best of 17:40.37 set last April on an outdoor track.
"She led from wire to wire and had a great kick the last couple laps, proving her fitness," said Assistant Track and Field Coach Kate Bucknam, who coaches the distance runners. "Huge confidence booster as we head into conference in a couple weeks."

Alyssa Andersen (Oswego, Ill.) continued her strong senior season, finishing fourth in the weight throw with a toss of 16.16 meters. On the men's side, junior Stephen Gibson (Tuscola, Ill.) threw 17.40, well off his top measurements from this season but enough to finish third.
"Stephen was a bit off today but still had some good throws, so it's good to know what his off days look like right now," said Belmont Assistant Track Coach Joe Frye, who coaches the throwers.
Day 2 of the Marshall Invite begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Cline Athletic Complex.
