BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Belmont women's cross country and track student-athlete senior Hannah Wittman (Lindenhurst, Ill.) has been selected as one of the six individuals to receive the Ohio Valley Conference's Scholar-Athlete Award for 2015-16, the league office announced Friday.

Wittman becomes just the second female and the fourth overall Belmont student-athlete to garner the honor.

A captain of both the Belmont cross country and track and field teams, Wittman owns OVC records in the outdoor 1500-meters and 10,000-meters in addition to Belmont records in the indoor mile and the 6K distance in cross country.  She earned 2014 OVC Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year honors and has been a three-time All-OVC selection in cross country, including finishing second at the 2014 OVC Cross Country Championship and third in 2013.

In the classroom, Wittman, who is majoring in accounting, has a 3.84 grade point average and has been named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll three times.  She has also earned multiple Dean's List honors as well as being named a USTFCCCA All-Academic selection.

She is also involved with Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and Campus Crusade for Christ as well as the Student-Athlete Talent Show which raises funds for Special Olympics.  Away from campus, Wittman has volunteered with Hands on Nashville, Friends of Jaclyn Foundation and the Nashville Rescue Mission.

"We are thrilled for Hannah," said Belmont's Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Jeff Langdon.  "This award is a culmination of hard work, persistence, and dedication over the past four years.  Coach Casavant has done a fantastic job of coaching her to great success in cross country and track.  In addition, Hannah has truly bought into and models our slogan of 'Instilling Character, Inspiring Greatness.'

Awarded each fall (but based on the prior year's achievements), the OVC Scholar-Athlete Award is the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes and it is given annually to three men and three women of junior or senior status who have accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena, as well as leadership qualities.

The winners are selected from a group of nominees by OVC Faculty Athletics Representatives.  To be eligible, honorees must have at least a 3.25 GPA and conduct themselves in a manner which has brought credit to the student-athlete, his or her institution, intercollegiate athletics and the Ohio Valley Conference.

Wittman is the fourth Belmont student-athlete to earn the OVC Scholar-Athlete Award joining former women's soccer player Alison Alcott and former men's basketball player J.J. Mann, who were honored last year, and former baseball player Chase Brookshire, who was honored for the 2012-13 school year.

Other 2015-16 OVC Scholar-Athlete honorees include: Austin Peay's Breigh Jones, Jacksonville State's Dalton Screws, Morehead State's Logan Hogge, and UT Martin's Ben Reeves and Katie Schubert.
