MURRAY, Ky. -- Led by a standout performance by senior Hannah Wittman (Lindenhurst, Ill.), the Belmont women's cross country team snagged a fifth place finish at the 2015 OVC Cross Country Championship on Saturday morning. The Bruins tallied 143 points on the challenge course.
Wittman battled to take second place overall with a time of 17:15. For her efforts, she was named All-OVC First Team on the heels of being named Female Athlete of the Year in a ceremony the night before the competition.
Along with Wittman, three other runners finished in the top-40 -- Kiera Weems (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) took 29th, followed by Hannah Denton (Burns, Tenn.) and Mallory Young (Signal Mountain, Tenn.), who placed 37th and 38th, respectively.
"Today was definitely a tough day for our women's group. We had to pull out two of our stars last minute due to injuries and that, of course, hurt us," said Assistant Coach Ashley Casavant. "Senior Hannah Wittman battled today and made it a true race from the start. We could not be more proud of Hannah and what she has done in the Belmont uniform."
