CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- The Belmont Bruins women's cross country team will be competing in the OVC Championships at the Southeast Missouri University home course in Cape Girardeau, Mo. tomorrow at 9:00 A.M.
The Belmont Bruins come into the OVC Championship as the third best school in the OVC behind Southeast Missouri and Eastern Kentucky, according to the USTFCCCA collegiate rankings.
This will be a small meet as only 12 teams will be competing in the race compared to some of the previous races, such as the Louisville Classic and the Bradley 'Pink' Race, which had over 30 teams competing. Coach Kate Bucknam says that her team will be able to adjust to the size of the race:
"It's going to be a lot smaller of a meet. The other meets we had 30 to 40 teams on the line, and so obviously there's only going to be 12 teams and it's a lot smaller. The mindset doesn't change. I think if anything, it helps a little bit, and the competitiveness obviously goes up. I thin it will help having fewer people on the line and see where they're at in the race."
In the previous year's OVC Championship in Charleston, Ill., the Bruins finished second in the field behind Eastern Kentucky with a team score of 80.
Kortney Schardt finished second for Belmont (No.13 overall) with a time of 17:45.1. This year she has consistently been the top finisher for the Bruins, so look for her to do the same thing in Cape Girardeau.
With only 12 teams on the line, the Bruins will be looking to make a statement in this race and compete for the OVC title.
The race begins at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 27, at Cape Girardeau, Mo.
