TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— The Belmont Bruins finish 14th in the NCAA South Regional 6k with Kortney Schardt finishing 45th with a time of 21:36.7.
The Bruins were running in misty and humid conditions, but despite this, Belmont was able to run a solid a finish 14th out of the 30 teams that competed in the regional, beating out all of the OVC schools competing in the South Regional (Tennessee Tech, UT Martin, and Jacksonville State).
Throughout this entire season, junior Kortney Schardt has been proving herself to be a true leader on this year's Belmont squad. After coming off of a race in which she set a PR, Schardt went back to work and once again finished at the top of Belmont's roster.
Less than a minute apart from Schardt was sophomore Claire Cheeseman, who finished 79th with a time of 22:26.1.
After Cheeseman was senior Courtney Alama, who finished 93rd with a time of 22:40.7.
There were many questions surrounding this Belmont squad if they were going to be able to compete despite having to deal with talented seniors from the year before leaving, but thanks to the leadership from Kortney Schardt, Sierra Lax, and Courtney Alama as well as the potential found in girls like Claire Cheeseman and Taylor Cuneo, this group proved that they weren't just competitive but a true force to be reckoned with as proven in events such as the 1st place finish at the Belmont Opener and the 3rd place finish at the OVC Championship.
